Local Area Information

The house is set in a beautiful tranquil location, with woodland and rolling fields right on the doorstep.  There is an abundance of wildlife and local walks with stunning scenery.

The small village is equipped with all your daily needs, a good local shop, and an even better local pub/restaurant with award winning locally sourced food.  Trelowarren Estate next toThe Schoolhouse  has a fine dining evening restaurant, lunch and lunch and teas/coffees during the day, plus The Pantry which serves pizzas.  They also have a superb arts and crafts gallery featuring works of Cornish artists. All within a 30 minute walk, or just a very short drive.

The house is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is conveniently placed within easy driving distance of many of Cornwall's most stunning areas and local attractions.  St Michael's Mount is probably the most famous.  Others include the Lizard Lighthouse, the Seal Sanctuary, the Flicka Donkey Sanctuary.  Flambards Theme Park is a great day out for children (and adults!).   The list of activities is endless so we have a box of pamphlets in The Schoolhouse which you can peruse at your pleasure.

Fabulous beaches/coves are just a ten minute drive away, plus the stunning cliffs if you like walking the Coastal Path.  The Lizard is a much quieter area than North Cornwall.  if you are prepared to explore you can often find a beach to yourselves.

To the north east of The Peninsula is the tranquil Helford River with its many creeks (Frenchman's Creek isn't far).  Here you can sail or kayak, or take a walk along the riverside.  You can find little, sheltered coves where you can paddle, swim, rest and have a picnic.  Have a meal in the Shipwrights in Helford Village - a great day out.

Being a peninsula, The Lizard has a great range of water sports.  Mullion and Coverack have professionally run activities, Helford has sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding,  Poldu Cove has a 5* surfing school, and Polkerris has some of the best diving in English waters with training facilities.

Other local sports include the famous Mullion golf course on the cliffs, the horse riding school on the outskirts of Mullion will take you on rides on the beach, a public tennis court in Manaccan, and there are a number of golf courses within a reasonable drive which also welcome visitors.

Falmouth is a 20 minute drive.  You can park and sail down the river to the town which hosts the National Maritime Museum.  St Ives is a 30 minute drive. The Tate there is worth a visit, right next to a beautiful beach.  Penzance is about a 30 minute drive.  There's a lovely gallery on the outskirts with mainly work of Cornish artists.  If you are that way, fit in a visit to the Minack Theatre on the cliffs, plus a Polgoon Vineyard tour and wine tasting.

We have some beautiful gardens nearby which are open to the public.  The most famous are Trebah and Glendurgan, just 15 minutes away.  Both gardens go down to little beaches on the River Helford where you can stay and have a snack from the cafes.

Last, but not least, are the scenic little fishing and inland villages on The Peninsula, all having their unique pub(s) serving food, plus all are dog friendly.  If you like eating out this is the place to be.

There's such a variety of choice for adults and children on The Lizard, all within very easy access.  You can have a very relaxing holiday or an energetic one.  We are very happy to help guests plan their holiday at The Schoolhouse.  If you have any queries please contact either Jane Humby on mjhumby10@gmail.com or Richard on richardhumby1@hotmail.co.uk
